Admission to the United Kingdom

The United Kingdom is a prestigious destination, with world-class universities, a wide choice of programmes and the chance to stay for 2–3 years after graduation.

Visa types

A Student Visa, with a processing time of 3–8 weeks.

Language requirements

IELTS 6.0–6.5 for a Bachelor's degree and 6.5–7.0 for a Master's. Leading universities expect 7.0–7.5.

Academic requirements and documents

For a Bachelor's degree you'll need a secondary school certificate plus a Foundation programme, as direct entry after school isn't possible. A Master's requires a Bachelor's diploma. Your document pack: passport, diplomas with translation, language certificate, motivation letter and references.

Financial requirements

You'll need proof of funds to cover tuition and living costs, held in your account for at least 28 days.

Admission

Bachelor's applications go through UCAS (deadline 31 January, or 15 October for Oxford and Cambridge). Master's applications go directly to the university.

Visa application

Secure an offer and a CAS confirmation, complete the online application, pay the fees and the IHS surcharge, and give your biometrics.

Work for students

Up to 20 hours a week during term, and full time during the holidays.

Admission plan (over 12–18 months)

18 months out — choose a university. 15 months out — prepare for IELTS. 12 months out — sit IELTS. 10 months out — gather your documents. 9 months out — write your Personal Statement. 8 months out — apply through UCAS. 5–6 months out — receive your CAS. 3–4 months out — apply for your visa. 1 month out — visa and flight.

Common mistakes

A low IELTS score. Skipping the Foundation after school. Failing to hold funds for the full 28 days. Applying late, after 31 January. A weak motivation letter.
