Admission to Italy

Italy is an attractive destination: affordable tuition and strong programmes in design, architecture, fashion and the arts.

Visa types

The long-stay student visa, type D (for programmes of 90 days or more). After arrival, you must apply for a residence permit within 8 days.

Affordable tuition

At state universities, the cost depends on family income — the lower it is, the smaller the fee. Students with a low income may pay nothing at all or receive a scholarship.

Language requirements

For Italian-taught programmes — a B2 certificate (CILS, CELI). For some specialisations (law, philology) — C1. For English-taught programmes — IELTS 5.5–6.5 or TOEFL 70–90.

Academic requirements and documents

A Bachelor's requires 12 years of schooling (a school-leaving certificate + 1 year of university). A Master's requires a Bachelor's degree. Document package: international passport, diplomas translated into Italian, language certificate, motivation letter, proof of finances, and medical insurance.

Admission

Many programmes require entrance exams. Creative specialisations require a portfolio. Applications are made through the Universitaly portal. Deadlines are April–May for the autumn semester.

Applying for a visa

Obtain pre-enrolment via Universitaly, gather the documents, and submit the visa application at the embassy (in person). Processing time — up to 3 months.

Work for students

Up to 20 hours a week during your studies, and full-time during the holidays.

Admission plan (over 12–14 months)

12 months out — choosing a university. 10 months out — preparing for the language exam. 8 months out — gathering and translating documents. 6–7 months out — preparing your portfolio. 5–6 months out — registering for exams. 4 months out — pre-enrolment via Universitaly. 3 months out — submitting the visa application. 1 month out — receiving the visa and flying out.

The biggest mistakes

A low level of Italian. Not having 12 years of schooling before a Bachelor's. An incorrect portfolio. Missing deadlines. Missing the residence permit deadline (8 days).
