Admission to Spain

Spain is a popular choice: affordable tuition, leading programmes in economics, tourism, architecture and the arts, and a warm climate.

Visa types

A long-stay student visa (type D) for programmes of 90 days or more. Within 30 days of arrival, you must obtain a TIE card.

Language requirements

For Spanish-taught programmes — DELE or SIELE at B2 level, and C1 for some subjects. For English-taught programmes — IELTS 6.0–6.5 or TOEFL 75–90.

Academic requirements and documents

For a Bachelor's you need a secondary school certificate and must pass the Selectividad entrance exams (EvAU/PCE); for a Master's — a Bachelor's degree. Documents needed: passport, diplomas with translation, language certificate, motivation letter, references, proof of funds and medical insurance.

Admission

Applications go through the UNED portal or directly to the university. Deadlines for the autumn semester fall in April–June. The Selectividad exams are compulsory for international applicants.

Visa application

Secure an offer from the university and apply for the visa at the embassy in person. Once you arrive, obtain a TIE.

Work for students

Up to 20 hours a week (a permit is required).

Admission timeline (over 12–14 months)

12 months ahead — choose your university. 10 months ahead — prepare for DELE or IELTS. 8 months ahead — gather your documents. 7 months ahead — prepare for Selectividad. 6 months ahead — register for Selectividad. 5–6 months ahead — sit the exams and submit your application. 4 months ahead — receive the offer. 3 months ahead — apply for the visa. 1 month ahead — collect the visa and fly out.

Common mistakes

Weak Spanish. Failing to sit the Selectividad. The wrong documents for the exams. Missed deadlines. Late processing of the TIE.
