Admission to China

China is a dynamically developing destination: affordable tuition, scholarships for international students, and strong majors in technology, engineering and the Chinese language.

Visa types

X1 — for programmes longer than 180 days (Bachelor's, Master's). After arrival you must obtain a residence permit within 30 days. X2 — for short-term study of up to 180 days.

Choosing a programme

Language courses, Bachelor's and Master's programmes are available. Particularly strong are IT, engineering, economics and the Chinese language. Programmes are taught in Chinese or English.

Language requirements

For the Chinese language you need HSK: Bachelor's — HSK 4, Master's — HSK 5. For English — IELTS 5.0–6.0 or TOEFL 60–85.

Documents

Passport, diplomas with notarised translation, an HSK or IELTS certificate, a statement of purpose, two letters of recommendation, a medical certificate, a criminal record certificate, and photos.

Finances and scholarships

You must prove funds for tuition and living. The Chinese Government Scholarship (CSC) is available, covering tuition, accommodation and insurance, as well as university scholarships.

Obtaining the visa

Receive an Admission Notice from the university, then form JW202 (for X1) or DQ (for X2), submit it to the Chinese embassy, obtain the visa and enter the country. For X1, obtain a residence permit within 30 days. An overstayed visa means a heavy fine.

Admission plan (12 months out)

12 months out — choose the university and start learning Chinese. 10 months out — prepare for HSK and IELTS. 8 months out — gather and translate documents. 6 months out — submit applications. 4–5 months out — entrance assessments. 3 months out — receive the offer and pay the deposit. 2 months out — obtain JW202 and apply for the visa. 1 month out — visa and flight.

The main mistakes

A low HSK score (minimum 4 required, 5 is better). Missing application deadlines. Lacking a medical certificate. An overstayed residence permit. An incorrect translation of documents.
