How to Prepare for Studying Abroad

Step 1. Set your goals and timeline

Start 9–12 months ahead. Decide on your country, your programme and the budget you want to work with. The earlier you begin, the more options you'll have.

Step 2. Sharpen your language skills

Most universities ask for an IELTS (6.0–7.5) or TOEFL certificate. Allow 3–6 months to prepare, plus time for a retake if you need one.

Step 3. Gather your documents

You'll usually need a school certificate or diploma with a translation, a personal statement, references from teachers or lecturers, and a CV (for a Master's). Some countries also ask for a portfolio or entrance exams.

Step 4. Submit your applications and attend interviews

Apply to 3–5 institutions at once, and be ready for an online interview in English. Rehearse your answers beforehand.

Step 5. Receive your offer and apply for your visa

Once you're admitted, confirm your place, pay the fees and prepare your visa documents: proof of finances, the purpose of your trip and your return tickets.
