How to Prepare for Studying Abroad

Step 1. Define your goals and timeframe

Start 9–12 months ahead. Decide which country, which programme and what budget you want to apply with. The earlier you start — the more options you'll have.

Step 2. Brush up your language skills

Most universities require an IELTS (6.0–7.5) or TOEFL certificate. Allow 3–6 months for preparation and a retake if needed.

Step 3. Gather your documents

You'll usually need: a school certificate/diploma with translation, a motivation letter, recommendations from teachers or lecturers, and a CV (for a Master's). In some countries — a portfolio or entrance exams.

Step 4. Submit your applications and attend interviews

Send your documents to 3–5 institutions at once. Be ready for an online interview in English. Rehearse your answers in advance.

Step 5. Receive your offer and apply for your visa

After admission, confirm your place, pay the fees and prepare your visa documents: finances, purpose of trip and return tickets.
